IPL 2023: Punjab Kings Appoint Sunil Joshi As New Spin-bowling Coach

On Monday, January 16, Punjab Kings (PBKS) announced the appointment of former India National Cricket Team spin-bowling all-rounder Sunil Joshi as the new spin-bowling coach of the side ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, which will be the sixteenth season of the professional T20 cricket league established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Sunil Joshi, who was till recently a part of the Senior Men’s National Selection Committee, had worked with Punjab Kings (PBKS) in past as the assistant of head coach Anil Kumble. However, he relinquished the position in early 2020 to take up the national selector job. He was also part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as a player in 2008 and 2009.

The 52-year-old will now join the coaching setup that is headed by Trevor Bayliss, who replaced Anil Kumble at the helm after IPL 2022. Also, Wasim Jaffer is the batting coach of the side and Charl Langeveldt is the bowling coach.

PBKS took to Twitter to state that they are excited to have Joshi as the spin-bowling coach of the side for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Team PBKS will be led by a new captain, Shikhar Dhawan, in the Indian Premier League 2023. The franchise had released former captain Mayank Agarwal from the squad ahead of the IPL 2023 mini-auction and handed the captaincy responsibility to the veteran opener Dhawan.

Meanwhile, Punjab Kings (PBKS) released 9 players ahead of the mini-auction and they went into the auction with the second-highest purse of INR 32.2 crore. Punjab Kings (PBKS) had 16 players in the squad, of which 5 were from overseas and they had 9 open slots, including 3 for the overseas players.

They bought 6 players at the auction; Sam Curran, Sikandar Raza, Mohit Rathee, Harpreet Bhatia, Shivam Singh and Vidwath Kaverappa. Notably, Sam Curran became the most expensive player in the history of IPL as he was bought by the franchise for a whopping INR 18.50 crore.
