Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele has demanded huge wages from the club to extend his contract which is set to expire in six months. Dembele has plenty of offers on the table, including from his current club but it is not enough according to his representatives.
Dembele joined the Catalan giants in the 2018 summer for a reported fee of €102 million from Borussia Dortmund but struggled with injuries and form. This season, his struggles continued as he tested positive to the Covid-19 on his injury return this week. The French star normally plays in the right-wing role but Barcelona signed Spanish forward Ferran Torres for a reported fee of £54 million last week, which threatens his place in the squad.
Barcelona-Dembele Contract Negotiations Not Moving Forward?
The 24-year-old Dembele is yet to reach his best with La Liga giants but his struggles with fitness have been a big factor in contract negotiations. Newly appointed manager Xavi recently urged Dembele to extend his contract with them and the club has offered a contract similar to his previous one. Barcelona representatives have offered their final offer which they feel is very good for the player.

“We still don’t know what happens with Coutinho. Of course, we need to sell players in January”.

But according to a report from Sport, Dembele’s representatives are demanding a total of £67 million packages for their client. This package is divided into £29.3 million in wages, £25.1 million signing bonus, and £12.5 million agent fees. Barcelona doesn’t feel this offer is negotiable and decided to stick to their offer. They have decided to wait for Dembele’s final call on their offer but have given him the ultimatum to decide this very quickly. They are ready to sell him in January if he doesn’t agree to their contract terms, instead of losing him on a free transfer.
“We’re in constant contact with the player’s representatives, they know the situation well and we’ve been very patient. They know what we want – which is for him to stay – and they already have our offer.” – Barcelona director of football Mateu Alemany.
Barcelona are struggling with a lot of injuries to first-team players and also from the Covid-19 outbreak. This has affected their performances this season as well which saw a managerial change and the club getting knocked out of the UEFA Champions League from the group stages. Barcelona sits in 5th position in the league table with just 31 points from the opening 19 matches. They are 15 points behind leaders Real Madrid but just 2 points behind 3rd placed Real Betis. So finishing this season in top-four will be a high priority for manager Xavi Hernandez.
